Esta antología de textos se sitúa dentro del conjunto de la obra de D. Miguel en lo que denominamos «ensayos» y está articulada en torno a la síntesis lograda por Unamuno acerca de su concepción del hombre y de Dios desde el principio del siglo xx (1900) hasta su muerte (1936). El esfuerzo desplegado por Unamuno en esos 36 años está «esencialmente» articulado en torno a dos temas; de manera que Unamuno podría decir lo mismo que dijo San Agustín en sus Soliloquios: Deus et anima scire cupio: «lo único que deseo conocer es a Dios y al alma». Dios y su antropología del hombre concreto son los dos temas «esenciales» que nos permiten hablar del «Unamuno esencial». Esa es la idea que nos ha llevado a configurar esta «antología de textos», en la que pensamos está contenido el núcleo de la filosofía de Unamuno.

Miguel de Unamuno (Bilbao 1864-Salamanca 1936), figura destacada de la Generación del 98, escritor y filósofo, fue catedrático de griego y rector en la Universidad de Salamanca. Su extensa obra comprende narrativa (Amor y pedagogía, Niebla, San Manuel Bueno mártir), poesía, teatro, y numerosos artículos y ensayos de temas muy diversos. Expresó su filosofía en los libros Vida de Don Quijote y Sancho, Del sentimiento trágico de la vida en los hombres y en los pueblos, y La agonía del cristianismo.
